Busy Border Post – Not!

Because we were heading up the west side of Tanzania towards Rwanda, we decided to cross the border at Kasesya, just north of Mbala in Zambia. We knew it was a small post, but we were the only ones there.

Nonetheless, all went to plan and we crossed in about two hours.

On the way to the border we visited Samfya on Lake Bengweulu, Chishimba Falls and Kalambo Falls – the latter being the second tallest in Africa. They were quite magnificent.

      Hello Dave,
Please advise more on the customs and immigrations process leaving Zambia.
Please advise road condition after leaving Mbala toward Zombe through Kasesya and upto Sumbawanga.
      Distances, Speed, Time.
Anything else you could provide, advise, suggest.
      Thanks

      Hi Dave,

We will be travelling from SA to Kenya and plan on transiting through the Zombe border post into TZ. Could you advise on the state of the roads (we will have an 8t truck, 5 ton truck and a car pulling a rally car on a trailer). I plan to go Zombe, Sumbawanga, Mpanda, Utende, Sikonge, Itiga, Singida, Babati and Arusha. I want to avoid Tunduma if possible.

      Many thanks,

      Lee

        Hi Lee,

So I guess you have seen this

I can only comment on the Sumbawanga to Mpanda. We went north from Mpanda and you will turn east to Sikonge.

The road from Sumbawanga to Mpanda is good, and I think, mostly tar, but with many speed bumps, after that, going north, the going gets tough (see post). Going east, I don’t know. Sorry. The road through Katavi NP, before reaching Mpanda, is dirt, but will be fine for you (we are in a 11T 4×4 truck).

        Hello Lee,
We tried to cross out from Mbala to Kasesya on Sunday 04th April 2021 and the Zambian Authorities denied vehicular modes to leave or cross. Foot traffic is allowed as are taxi motorbikes ferrying people and goods.
When do you intend to reach Mbala?
