Big Bertha Goes Hi-Tech

Do you remember when there was no Internet or World Wide Web? It hardly seems possible that we survived without it.  It is now like a drug – we are almost addicted to it.  Five days without WiFi and we are climbing the walls. Some days Francine and I actually have to talk to each other!

We normally satisfy our craving by using cellular data on our phones and WiFi where we can get it (camp grounds, cafes etc.).  But here in South America, and Argentina especially, coverage is not universal. Although this means that we have to do without our drug, it also means we have no means of emergency communication.

But no more; we have bought a Starlink satellite system and it’s bloody brilliant!

We are online anywhere within five minutes of switching it on.  It’s such fun watching it do its thing as it rotates around on its motors searching for a satellite and then suddenly – wham unlimited data at 100+ mb/s.  Thank you, Mr. Elon Musk, another brilliant technological innovation. (Francine – And when it’s turned off (horizontal mode), we can also use it as a coffee table.)

We bought the hardware for just over £200 and the monthly subscription, good for the whole of South America, is about £47/month.  Cheaper than heroin (one assumes)!
