We were almost going to give Zanzibar a miss. We had been having a bad week: Dave grazed Big Bertha against a gate post, our boiler had started to leak water, air had begun to escape from Big Bertha’s air suspension bellows and we received a large bill from MAN for last year’s wheel hub works. Oh, and did I mention our ant infestation?
But we know it can’t always be plain sailing and so we parked Big Bertha at the MAN garage in Dar Es Salaam, and caught the high speed ferry to Zanzibar. And we are so very pleased we did; two hours later we arrived on the beautiful island of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania.
We spent our first three days in a lovely Arabic-style hotel on the seafront and explored Stone Town – the island’s old town. We then hired a car and ventured north to stay in a beach hotel on the north eastern shores.
It was idyllic.
We came back thoroughly refreshed and ready to tackle anything!
Fantastic to have such an idyllic break in beautiful Zanzibar! As I remember from our visit there, the sand on the beaches is so fine it is like walking through cream!
Great decision to give Big Bertha some well deserved TLC as well!
We were very pleased we made the effort!
Dave lucky you. Zanzibar was the one place in East Africa I never got to but really wanted to. Had a number of trips to Dar but never found the time to make the trip across the water. Stone Town looks wonderful.
Keep it on your list. It is a wonderful destination.
