Au Revoir Kenya!

Prompted by my good friend Gary, here is our small missive on our remaining time in Kenya, having now crossed back into Tanzania.

After journeying south from Lake Turkana, we visited Nanyuki and then around to stay on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. It was whilst here that the Kenyan government invoked a blockade around the five counties surrounding Nairobi to combat Covid 19. We had a decision to make: either cross into the blockaded area and stay there or stay outside.  Thus our plans to head towards Lake Naivasha were abandoned and we headed for the coast instead.

We spent an enjoyable few days in Tsavo’s National Parks on the way there, but, because it had rained, animal sightings were few.

At the coast we met up with Chris, brother of Max, friend of my parents in the UK.  He made some very useful introductions that allowed us to park our truck at Malindi whilst we flew to Lamu Island.

On our return to the mainland, we journeyed to Diani Beach and stayed in an apartment for ten days, enjoying the air-conditioning and making good use of the washing machine.

We met other overlanding trucks whilst on the coast: Erich and Maja & Ernst and Verena, all from Switzerland.  It’s good to meet fellow truckers.  We first saw Erich and Maja in Namibia!

And finally, we were both very lucky to receive our dose one Covid jabs, courtesy of the Kenyan health authorities.  We hope to get dose two later in our travels.
