San Cristobal de las Casas and Tuxtla Gutiérrez

Leaving the heat behind us at the El Chiflon waterfalls, we climbed up above 2,000m to visit San Cristobal, a very nice town and similar to Antigua in Guatemala. It was a bit of a fight to get into the campsite, so we camped here for 5 nights, chilled (literally) and took an excellent walking tour around the town. Daniel, our tour guide, explained about the problems Mexico faces with the management of water. The issue is particularly bad in Chiapas state (where San Cristobal is located), with the infrastructure so poor that sewage runs into the rivers, contaminating the water. Travellers warn each other to be careful of eating out or there’s a good chance of suffering from “San Cristobal Belly”. Fortunately, this time, we both escaped!

From San Cristobal we drove to just outside Tuxtla Gutiérrez to visit the Sumidero Canyon by boat. We camped overnight at Cahuaré and took the first boat out the next morning. We saw crocodiles, numerous birds, spider monkeys, towering cliffs and a unique ‘Christmas Tree’ waterfall. The next day we took a taxi to visit the five miradors overlooking the canyon.

The next day we took Big Bertha to a Michelin dealer for a new set of tyres and the day after to the MAN garage for an oil change and some routine checks.
