Lake Tahoe et al.

At the time we visited (March) Lake Tahoe (1897m) should have been snowbound. But thank you to global warming, the sun was shining, the skies were blue and the roads were clear. Leaving James’ Treanor Vineyard in the Napa Valley we skirted around Sacramento and climbed up to the south shore of Lake Tahoe. From there we went clockwise around the lake, first stopping at Eagle Point to hike to a couple of view points over Emerald Bay. We then camped at Sugar Pine Point before backtracking to Emerald Cove to hike down to Vikingsholm beach. From there we continued our circumnavigation of the lake into Nevada and climbed up to Mount Rose to overnight (there is precious little parking for RVs lakeside). The next day we descended to the lake again to hike the East Shore Trail, a 10km beautiful hike along the lake shore.

We then continued around the lake before exiting east over a high pass to Carson City. Having camped overnight just outside Carson, we explored the city the next day.

From Carson City we drove to Virginia City, a real ‘Old West’ town and managed to park overnight in the centre. It is definitely a tourist destination but does have a resident population. It was cool to walk around and travel back in time.

From here we drove through Reno, to Truckee, for a quick look before crossing over Donner Pass. There followed a short visit to the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum (as you know, we cannot pass a transport museum without taking a look).

We met Eric, Christine, and family, in Ecuador and they invited us to stay with them at their home in Chico. Eric took us for a walk around Chico Canyon and then later, after Breakfast at Denny’s, Eric and Christine showed us around Chico. Thanks a lot, guys!
