When driving off road, it can be very advantageous to deflate our tyres thereby greatly extending their footprint, or contact area. Deflating helps driving in sand for example.
Letting air out of our tyres is fairly straightforward using my ARB deflator from my desert driving days – it’s a device that extracts the inner Schrader valve, but keeps it captive.
When it comes to inflating, our truck has air operated systems and therefore also a hefty on-board air compressor. However, to connect our tyre inflation hose to the air tank meant crawling under the truck to attach the hose to a test point on one of the air tanks. This gets to be a chore when the surface is muddy or wet for example. I have now installed a hose to make a test point accessible at the side of BB.
I can’t thank Kevin at Air Brake Connections Limited enough for his help and advice with this modification. I would recommend this company to anyone needing truck air system advice and parts.
I can’t believe you’re not making aTV shows out of this! I’d watch it!
What? Inflating tyres?! 😉
I know how difficult it is with an ordinary 4×4 to re inflate the tyres after driving in the desert!
I can only imagine the difficulty with Big Bertha’s tyres!
Great job getting a good solution for it.
