Botswana – The Wrong Time to Come

The rainy season was late in ending this year and, unfortunately, we decided to leave Namibia prematurely to head east into Botswana before it had departed. This led to a change of plans and instead of heading onto Zimbabwe from Botswana, we returned to Zambia to stay with Dylan and wait the rains out. More on that in another blog.

We drove the long and straight Trans-Kalahari Highway from Windhoek and then headed towards Maun and the Okavango Delta in Botswana, stopping at a couple of nice campsites on the way.

The weather in Maun was a real disappointment and our helicopter trip over the Delta was not the ‘wow’ we were expecting (although we did get to see it green). It was just the wrong time of year. David also lost the keys to the truck, which caused some temporary mayhem. However, on the bright side we met a couple of lovely ladies travelling from Cape Town to Belgium in their Land Rover.

After a wet week in Maun we continued to the famous ‘Elephant Sands’ campsite which was terrific because of the ‘up close and personal’ elephant experience. From here we drove north and crossed into Zambia at the Kasane border crossing.

We will return to Botswana later in the year – when the sun is shining.
