Between October and December each year, about 12 million straw coloured fruit bats descend into a tiny patch of evergreen swamp forest inside Kasanka National Park, Northern Zambia. It’s the largest mammal migration in the world.
We decided that this was not to be missed, despite Big Bertha being temporarily immobile, and so we hired a car and drove the 1,040km round trip to Kasanka, where we swapped our bed in BB for an equally comfortable one at the Wasa Lodge.
Whilst there, we met fellow Overlanders Thomas and Esther, also travelling in a MAN truck.
What a fantastic sight and the Lodge looks fine too.
Thanks for keeping me up to date.
Thanks Fred. Kasanka was well worth the visit.
I love the tree hide! We took Berrima to see the fruit bats here in Canberra in the Autumn, they come back every year to the same nursery roost. It’s a great sight (and sound!) but you do get a crick in the neck from ground level…
Hi Reinhard. Francine was a bit nervous climbing it (and coming down in the dark). Not only a crick in the neck, you have to remember to keep your mouth shut too!
What do fruit bats eat Dave?
Is this a trick question, Gary?
Wow! That was definitely worth the trip, even without Big Bertha!
Itβs amazing the amount of people you meet, experiencing the same dream as the both of you.
It looks beautiful I would happily stay in the cabin for a while.
Take care
Love Pauline & John xx
Hi Pauline, the lodge was very relaxing. Not a lot to do there, so three nights were enough.
Wow, amazing. Enjoy your travels xx
Thank you Claire!
Dear Dave and Francine… you had a fantastic day there! π

Hi Dave and Francine, what am amazing experience! Great blogging, iust catching up with what I have missed.
Note I have changed my email address. Still in Singapore but not sure for how much longer! I trust you have seen the recent news about the HSRL to Malaysia?
Hi Jeremy!! Yes the adventure continues. Plenty of opportunity to practice my AD4x4 skills. Yes I heard about the HSR. The two countries are like chalk and cheese. Enjoy Singapore – it was my second favourite posting (after UAE). Dave
