Antigua and Lake Atitlán

We skipped Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. I say ‘skipped’ but it still took a couple of hours to drive through it on the main roads on the way to Antigua. But after a long days drive we finally arrived at the VagaMundo Camp in Antigua and found Ursula waiting for us (we met at Tikal). The camp was lovely with a good few overlanders staying. We socialised and got some mundane tasks done (like washing).

Antigua is a beautiful city with mostly single story buildings, cobbled streets and a diverse range of good restaurants. Overlooking the town are three volcanoes, one of which is active. The campsite was within easy walking distance and we had a fun time exploring and eating out.

After bidding everyone farewell and ‘Buen Viaje’ we crossed country to Lake Atitlán. We thought we would stay for two nights, but ended up staying four nights on the shore of this beautiful lake overlooked by a number of volcanoes. Whilst there, we booked a tour to Central America’s largest market at Chichicastenango, took a boat to the next village, Santa Cruz, and visited the nature centre near to the campsite.

From here, we drove to the border at La Mesilla and crossed into Mexico. Bye bye Central America..
