Angeles de la Ruta

This is what Juan Carlos and Andrea called us after having rescued them from a sticky situation!

We were on our way up to the thermal spa town of Copahue, at the base of Copahue Volcano, and had just passed 2000m altitude when we came across Juan Carlos and Andrea.  They had accidently driven off the road and their car was solidly lodged on some rather large boulders.  We stopped to ask if we could be of assistance and, after agreeing it would be welcome, I set about ‘making a plan’ (a favourite African expression).

Step 1 would be to pull their car from the top in order to lift the car off the rocks and onto their driver side wheels.

We anchored one of our straps around their car’s B pillar and to Big Bertha’s front recovery points.  I prefer to do this so that I can clearly see what is going on (as opposed to pulling from behind).  We then gently lifted their car and removed the large boulders that it had been sat on.

Step 2 would be to build a small road out of stones on which the car wheel could be lowered onto and then over which we could pull their car onto the road from behind.

This worked well and we managed to recover their car without further damage.  A complicated recovery, and new friends.
