We get asked all the time about the statistics behind our journey. When we started, we made a budgetary estimate as to how much our adventure would cost us and this has been pretty much on target. Budding adventurers may find this very useful in formulating their own plans.
These stats do not include our ‘background’ costs such as storing our household belongings, shipping Big Bertha to and from Africa, our flights to and from Africa and, costs associated with home visits and ongoing life costs such as driving licences, UK national insurance and vaccinations, etc. Note that we spent nine months stationary in Zambia during Covid with Dylan, which skews the stats somewhat.
A lot of money, but actually for what you have experienced and the wonderful memories you have made, it’s amazing.
You really are living the dream.
Be safe❤️
Thanks for sharing this. I’m surprised as the pretty modest cost for two people per year. You guys really know how to stretch your resources. Good job! I’m sure it’s hard to leave Africa, but I’m excited to hear about your next adventure in South America. Welcome to the Western Hemisphere – safe travels!
Thanks for the great budget info. 26k for the Brooklet maintaining surprises me…. always had in mind this German Trucks are top notch. But on the other hand you had 62k kilometers ….
Have a safe trip to South America.
Hi Robert, I think I have to be fair to German Trucks… This sum (26K) mainly comprised a MAJOR service by Terry in Johannesburg. Our truck is now ten years old and has surpassed 250k km. We asked Terry to do ‘everything’ necessary to survive the next four years in South America where there is minor support for MAN. We had also broken a leaf spring in Zimbabwe and this had to be made for us. Many parts were replaced and that 26K also included a set of tyres (5K). I detailed the work here
Thank you for sharing. Nice to see the stats for traveling with Bertha. Fuel remains expensive on big rigs. But knowing you could venture safely anywhere is a huge plus in Africa.
Thank you soooo much for sharing your beautiful Journey!!
This is brilliant! For the age of BB and what she’s been through, that’s actually VERY reasonable on all the costs. We’ve seen others hitting about 20k/yr on average, then taking into consideration inflation, etc. REALLY appreciate sharing the info for future overlanders like us!
I have really enjoyed your African blogs. I think that the experiences and the people you have met will have been worth the money spent.
The memories of Africa will never fade.
