Travelling down a gravel back-road towards Fish River Canyon, we were starting to wonder where we might camp as the clock hit four pm. It was then we came across a brightly painted plough with a sign for the De Klerk Boerdery (farm). We took a chance, opened the gate and trundled over a rise to be greeted by a beautiful farmhouse adjacent to a lake. Dave knocked on the door to be welcomed by Johan who immediately invited us to camp next to his lake.
We spent a wonderful evening birdwatching and then a very peaceful night. The next day we met Berdine, Johan’s wife, and spent an hour chatting with them about Namibia, the farm and their family. The property is 800 hectares and three generations of the De Klerk family have farmed it, it now being in the hands of Johan’s son. The primary farm income is from meat, predominantly sheep.
Johan and Berdine sent us on our way with a bag of oranges and lemons (picked straight from their trees) and some travel tips for our next destinations – Fish River Canyon and the Orange River.
Thank you Johan and Berdine!!
