It’s not Marrakech!
When we arrived in Morocco, we had a rough idea that we would travel a conventional route – down the coast, passing through Casablanca, Essaouira, Agadir, Marrakech, etc, and back up on the other side of the Atlas mountain ranges, which split Morocco in half. But, as we wanted to test Bertha in the desert and we thought it would be better to do that in the cooler weather, we changed our minds and headed inland first. Gradually, as the beauty of the desert and the mountains seduced us, thoughts of jostling with the crowds in the bigger towns became less attractive. So many travellers we met spoke negatively of Marrakech (in particular), but finished with “.. but you’ve got to go there”! We disagreed and we don’t regret our choice. We have enjoyed the bustling, friendly Medina of Fes and shopping in the markets was always fun, but to us, the beauty of Morocco lies in the vast empty landscapes, the generosity of the Berber people and the unpolluted skies filled with stars.
