On our way from Medellin to Bogotá, where we will leave Big Betha for three weeks and fly home to the UK, we visited Guatapé, known for its huge rock outcrop – El Peñón de Guatapé.
We parked Big Bertha near the centre in Guatapé and explored the picturesque town. The town is on the banks of a man made lake – but with a difference – all the hilltops remain above water. So the lake is more like a vast series of interconnected small lakes. The next day Dave climbed the 702 steps to the top of El Peñón de Guatapé and waited for the clouds to clear for a view across the lakes.
On the way from Guatapé to Bogotá we performed a Motorway Rescue, visited one of Colombia’s colourful towns, Santorini and Dave took a tandem paragliding flight!
We decided to stay in a hotel in downtown Bogota and leave Big Bertha in a truck park near the airport (where BB would also stay whilst we visited the UK), allowing us to partake in the downtown nightlife. Cerro de Monserate sits on a hill overlooking Bogotá and is reached by cable car. Unfortunately, it was a little overcast and the views were not as great as on a clear day. The next day we walked around the historic centre and visited the gold museum and the military museum. Before heading back to Big Bertha on our final day we visited the Museo Nacional located in the former jail.
As usual folks unending amazing descriptions and colourful and amazing photographs. Thank you for taking me along on your journey! Enjoy your break in UK.
Fascinating place, 702 steps! I’m tired just thinking about it.
Not sure about the paragliding either!
It looks so well presented, such beautiful artifacts.
Where next?
