Our ferry, the Pont Aven, broke down again and we found ourselves with six ‘extra’ days in Northern Spain. Inspired by the magical film ‘The Way’, we visited Santiago de Compestella and Cabo Fisterra – significant parts of the ‘Camino de Santiago’.
We parked up in a town 7km outside Santiago, joined the many pilgrims and walked the Camino to the Cathedral. It was very special.
The next day we drove to the coast and then drifted along the magnificent coastal road to Muros where we parked up in the port for the night. That evening we had our best meal to date: fresh mussels, Padron peppers, fresh calamari and a bottle of local white wine.
The next day we continued our magical drive along the coastal road, passing picturesque town after beautiful beach, to Cabo Fisterra , where we parked up overlooking the lighthouse.
Galicia is not on the way to anywhere and has a maritime climate (i.e. wet), but, the sky stayed an azure blue for us and we are so glad we made the effort to see this part of the world.
Yes Galicia is very beautiful! I did the Camino Portuguese ( well, the last 120 kms ) with a friend in April. In spite of the rain, it was a wonderful walk through vineyards, tiny villages and forests of oak and eucalyptus…just stunning!
Best wishes,
Jean and Fraser
Hi Jean – Galicia was well worth the diversion. We’ll definitely return one day.
