When we first considered Africa, we toyed with the idea of driving from Morocco down the West Coast. I looked at the map and the highlights of each country, searching for something that really stood out. I hesitated at Gabon (possibility of seeing gorillas), but there was no way I could bypass Angola.
My research showed a country with BIG landscapes and astounding natural beauty. Top of my list of must-sees was Kalandula Falls, which (like the other Angolan attractions) I had never heard of before. The third tallest falls in Africa, situated on the river Lucala, the Kalandula Falls are beautiful, powerful, deafening, awe-inspiring. A sheet of mocha and vanilla-coloured water cascades at a furious speed to reach the river below, sending up a cloud of mist as it falls. And yet, where at Victoria Falls there would be tourists tripping over each other to line up for the best selfie, here there is no-one – just two other tourists (Overlanders, like us) staying at the Falls. After all, this is Angola – why visit?
Here are some pics
Beautiful, I’m so envious!
Thanks for reading our blog. Hope all is well in the U.S. 🙂
Amazing? The understatement of the year.
I had not even heard of Kalandula Falls. I have now and Angola has just moved up my ‘must do’ list.

Angola is definitely worth a visit! Very simple E-Visa process introduced this year (- fortunately for us!). People very friendly and welcoming.
Looks fabulous! You two are having an amazing adventure.
Thanks Hazel. Yes, it’s still quite hard to believe that we’re here!
Beautiful untouched parts of the world and there you are! What an adventure and the smiles on your faces say how wonderful it is!! Awesome! Keep those amazing stories coming.
Thanks Gabrielle. Will do! xx
I’m really enjoying reading about your adventures, and seeing your amazing photos.
Thanks for sharing them. Where are you now?
Hi Madeleine,
So glad you are enjoying our missives. We have now left Angola and have returned to Namibia. We expect to be in Zambia for Christmas.
