Mark White, an old Moroccan hand, whom we met whilst camping in Tinghir, advised us that, should we ever get the chance, we should attend a Moroccan Tbourida (or Fantasia). We did our research and saw that an inter-regional competition was scheduled for April 27 & 28 in Meknes.
We were camping nearby in Azrou and so we arranged for a car to take us in – and we were so glad we did. Mark had told us it was an event for the locals (Moroccans) and he was right – we saw no more than ten other tourists there. It wasn’t advertised very well at all.
So what is a Tbourida? From our observations, it is a horsemanship competition where teams of fifteen riders gallop from one end of an arena to the other and then fire their muskets in unison. All very dramatic.
Here are some photos…

Looks amazing!
What a great opportunity.
Yes. We were very lucky to be in the right place at the right time! 😉
Hi,
Nice experience!
You have still time left to stay in Morocco?
We left Morocco 17th of April and are now in Italy.
What will be your next country?
Enjoy!
Regards, Aranea, Henk & Moise (met you in the desert:))
Hi Aranea + family, Thanks for the comments and for reading our blog. We are leaving Morocco soon and head back through EU to UK. After that, we intend to ship to southern Africa to continue our adventure. Have fun in Italy!!!

WOW!!
What an adventure! You are really getting immersed in the different cultures…beautifully dressed horses…but how could they see?!
You both look very happy, right in your elements!
Keep those amazing postcards coming.
Bill & Gabrielle
Hi Bill and Gabrielle, thanks for the comment!! We are not entirely sure how the horses knew where to gallop, or why they didn’t bolt when the muskets were discharged. Nevertheless, great fun!!

Wow, how lucky were you to see something so authentic! Horses and riders look splendid. Moroccan trooping of the colour at hyperspeed! Wishing you many more experiences and adventures as long as you are safe and well 😙
Lots of noise, colour and spectacle – it was great! x
